Delete your account

You can delete your Hibbi account from inside the app, or by asking us to do it for you. This page says exactly what that destroys, and what it deliberately does not.

In the app

Settings → Your data → Delete your account

You are asked to type your household's name to confirm, so this is not something you can do by accident. Once you confirm, you are signed out straight away.

It is scheduled, not instant

Nothing is destroyed on the day you ask. Your account is locked out immediately, and everything is destroyed 30 days later. Until then your data really does still exist — we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

Those 30 days are there so you can change your mind. Sign back in and Hibbi shows you nothing but a screen telling you the deletion is pending; Keep my account cancels it, and you have the app back. That screen and signing out again are the only things you can do while a deletion is pending, so it is not possible to use Hibbi for a month without noticing.

Asking a second time neither restarts the clock nor shortens it. The date is fixed the first time you ask.

If other people are in your household

The household survives. One person leaving must not wipe everyone else's lists, so nothing belonging to the household is deleted and nobody else is affected.

If you were the owner, ownership passes to whoever has been in the household the longest. It passes at the moment you ask rather than 30 days later, so the household is never left without anyone who can invite or remove members. That has one consequence worth knowing before you start: if you cancel, you come back as an ordinary member rather than as the owner.

What goes is your login. It is destroyed, and it cannot be recovered.

What stays is your member profile, emptied out. Its name becomes Removed, its icon, colour, PIN and PIN recovery answer are cleared, and it can no longer be logged into. It is emptied rather than deleted because other people's tasks, events and list items point at that profile: deleting it outright would blank you out of their data, and leaving your name on it would keep personal details after you had asked for them to go. Emptying it is the only option that does neither.

What also stays is everything you put into the household — the items you added to lists, the events and tasks you made, the notes, contacts and bills. Those belong to the household rather than to you, and the people still in it keep them. Anywhere your name was attached to one of them, it reads Removed too.

If you are the only account in your household

Then the household goes with you, in full, and nothing is held back. That is all thirteen tables of it: member profiles, lists and everything on them, calendar events, tasks, bills, saved shopping items, contacts, notes and drawings, recipes, meal plans, the activity log, and the household's own settings.

Once the 30 days are up, none of it can be recovered.

Take a copy first, if you want one

Settings → Your data → Export your data

This hands you everything in the household in one lot — as a file to save if you are on the web, or as text to paste into a note or an email to yourself if you are on the phone, where saving a file needs an app update Hibbi has not had yet. It is the whole household's data rather than only yours, because that is how it is stored. Do it before you delete rather than after — once the 30 days are up there is nothing left to export.

If you cannot get into the app

Lost phone, locked out, already uninstalled it — you do not need the app to be able to leave. Email us and we will do it for you.

Subject: Hibbi — delete my account

Tell us the email address your account signs in with and the name of your household. Send it from that email address if you still can — it is how we know the request is yours.

There is no automatic system behind that address: a person reads it and acts on it by hand, so this route is slower than the button in the app. What it results in is the deletion described above — the same 30-day wait, and the same outcome for your household depending on whether anyone else is in it. If you get back into the app inside those 30 days and want to stop it, signing in and choosing Keep my account still works.
